How do you train a cat to do complex stunts? Chief Executive Human (CEH) Samantha Martin uses clicker training, a technique involving only positive reinforcement, to train her troupe. The Rock Cats play guitar, drums, and piano, and they’ve recently been joined by the Jazz Cats on saxophone, trumpet, and clarinet. The show finale is the only all-cat band in the world: Tuna and the Rock Cats. This troupe of trained domestic house cats, all former orphans, rescues, and strays, give a one-of-a-kind “purrformance” that includes cats riding skateboards, jumping through hoops, ringing bells, balancing on balls, and performing other feats of agility and entertainment.

The show will open on Friday September 2nd at Gallery5 for the monthly First Friday art walk in the historic Jackson Ward Arts District. From paintings and ceramics to film, photo, and projections, Mother India shares some of the color, texture, tones, and vibrancy that is unique to Indian art. Gallery5 is thrilled to display a group of artists that help share this notion. The art itself has remained rooted in some of the oldest traditions on Earth while also constantly evolving to meet the relevant needs of contemporary life. On one hand they hold an ancient artistic lineage, on the other, a modern approach to our ever changing world. Indian artists have a unique offering to share with the world. India’s cultural heritage has been passed on through the arts throughout all of India’s history of colonialism, gaining independence, and entering the international arena as a global superpower. Mother India is a month-long art show at Gallery5 that celebrates the overlap of our region’s Indian art and artists! Art and India have been inseparable for thousands of years. Fortunately I’ve got a chance to fix that this month. My knowledge of Indian art and artists is next to nothing. They are graduated in size, the largest is 1 ¾”, then reducing in size by one-quarter inch increments to 1 ½”, 1 ¼”, 1″, ¾”, ½” and the smallest ¼”. If two or more riders have a tie score, the ring size is reduced until a winner is determined. Tournaments permit each rider three “charges” at a specified size ring to determine the winner. The rings dangle from wooden arches that suspend the ring 6 feet 7 inches from the ground. This is not the jousting of medieval knights clashing against each other but rather with the words, “Sir Knight of Possum Hollow (or whatever moniker they go by)! The rings are hung and the track is clear! Charge Sir Knight!” a horse carries a rider down an 80-yard track to attempt to catch three rings with a lance. If you google oldest continuous sporting event in the US you’ll be told the Kentucky Derby but it started in 1875 nearly 50 years after the first joust at Natural Chimneys.

Talking with spectators we learned that one family was putting out their 5th generation of riders and 3-4 generations were common.

During the Civil War one of Stonewall Jackson’s generals, Turner Ashby, jousted. The first joust was held in 1821 and continues today. Natural Chimneys claims to be home to the nation’s oldest continuously held sporting event, the National Chimmneys Jousting Tournament.
